“¿Por qué amamos el indie-rock?” se preguntaron los redactores de Entertainment Weekly, y se pusieron a repasar los lanzamientos de los últimos 25 años. Y como las respuestas para esa pregunta eran diversas y subjetivas, se dieron cuenta que mejor era hacer una selección del mejor lanzamiento de cada temporada del último cuarto de siglo.

Obviamente que para listar a los mejores discos del último cuarto de siglo tuvieron que determinar ciertas reglas para que la discusión sobre qué álbum debía ser el elegido no sea eterna:
1) sólo un disco representaría a cada temporada;
2) todas las bandas tenían que haber firmado con un sello independiente;
3) y que el término “banda” se tomaría literalmente (por eso no figuran artistas como Sufjan Stevens y Cat Power).
